He describes the process this took and how "children to the senior town spokesmen" were invited "to discuss how all RSU2 community members could support each child in meeting their desired personal and professional goals."

What Learners Think about Agency

What Learners Think about Agency | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Final post in Collaborative Blog Series on Learner Agency. The Institute for Personalized Learning asked kids what agency means to them.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The Institute for Personalized Learning asked some middle and high school students from their member districts to reflect on what learner agency means to them and to answer a few questions on the topic.

This brings our collaborative series on learner agency to a close. As we stated in the first blog post, Learner Agency: The Missing Link, “Learner agency often gets missed in conversations on transforming the educational system.” It is clear from the responses that kids have a sense of ‘agency’ when they feel in control of things that happen around them. They want to feel like they can influence events, especially how and what they learn.

Personalize Learning: Choice is More than a Menu of Options

Personalize Learning: Choice is More than a Menu of Options | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

This post explains the continuum of building choice so learners self-direct their learning for a purpose to build agency.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Providing choice can be confusing. If learners are choosing from a set of pre-planned choices from a computer program or a list of options from the teacher, then the teacher is ultimately the one responsible for the learning not the learner. As learners increase responsibility around voice, teachers can also provide a process that builds ownership as learners move toward agency with choice.

Discover the Learner in Every Child

Discover the Learner in Every Child | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
To understand how a learner learns best, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can be the lens that reduces barriers to learning and optimizes support to meet needs for all learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
This Part 3 in a Collaborative Blog Series on Learner Agency with the Institute for Personalized Learning.
Each learner has variability in how they access and process information, how they engage with content and how they express what they know and understand. Using the UDL lens of Access, Engage and Express to understand learners can not only help the teacher better design instruction but can also offer the learner a way to tell their story about how they learn best. When the learner uses the UDL lens to share how they learn, it validates them as a learner.
UDL is the framework that applies to ALL learners and as a means for creating personalized, learner-centered environments where each learner can develop agency.

Put the "Person" in "Personalization"

Put the "Person" in "Personalization" | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
It's all about the learner. Not technology or improving test scores. It's time to take semantics out of the conversations and focus on what really matters: the learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

It's not about technology. It's really not about school. It's all about the learner, the "person" in "personalization" and how they learn best and that what they learn is meaningful and for a purpose.  It is all about the relationships that learners make and need to support their learning. It is also about the teacher - a valuable person in the relationship. Teachers and learners can work together to develop learning goals and design activities that are authentic and relevant for the learner so they are engaged in learning. Learning has to have a context that learners can grasp and understand. - See more at: http://www.personalizelearning.com/2015/10/put-person-in-personalization.html#sthash.qyM0Grkz.dpuf

Wildlands School Personalizes Learning - A 10 Year Journey | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Website with blogs and journeys about personalized learning where teacher and learner roles change.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Discover Wildlands School who began their journey 10 years ago to create a school that would be learner-centered. They have written about this journey in their book, An Improbable School. Here is what they say in how they personalize learning.

"When it comes to personalized learning, Wildlands emphasizes personal relationships with individual students. We have learned it is more important to provide opportunities for students to be heard, be involved, be connected, find relevance, and play an important role in the school, than to tell them what we (or some far away committee) think they need to know. Honest conversations build relationships. Quality relationships build supportive and open learning environments where learners feel valued, connected, and are willing to take part." - See more at: http://www.personalizelearning.com/#sthash.mW9W4SSq.dpuf

PERSONALIZED LEARNING STARTS WITH THE LEARNER, NOT TECHNOLOGY

PERSONALIZED LEARNING STARTS WITH THE LEARNER, NOT TECHNOLOGY | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Personalized Learning is a controversial term that means different things to different people depending on where and how it is referenced. Some believe it is about promoting programs or tools that per
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Both of us are advocates for the use of technology to support instruction and to help learners gain independent learning skills. For years, as coaches consulting on technology integration, we observed classrooms where technology sat idle or to present lessons using new tools but the same way they teach: teacher-directed. The current system seems to encourage the use of technology for traditional teacher-directed methods.

The system needs to change from focusing on problems to rethinking the design of teaching and learning around how learners learn best. Personalized learning starts with the learner, not the technology!

Jennifer Colin's curator insight, October 25, 2015 8:40 PM

I have long been an advocate of finding activities that promote creativity and innovation in students.  The seven key skills Tony Wagner lists for students don't involve any specific content.  While I do believe these are vitally important, it seems unlikely that they will replace specific academic standards any time soon.  Because fostering creativity has been an important part of my life, and I have seen it do wonders in the lives of students, I would definitely encourage my teachers to utilize teaching methods and activities that enable this to occur.  Interdisciplinary learning, team collaboration, risk taking, and cultivated intrinsic motivation are definite assets to students in the real world.  But in our present situation we as educators need to find ways to pass on these valuable lessons while still teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Discover through this TedTalk from Peter Hutton how learners take control and ownership to their learning . Peter is a school principal with a radical solution, no school bell, no school levels, staff selection and curriculum is even decided by students. Result? No bullying, collaboration, innovation in school dynamics. As Principal of Templestowe College he developed an educational model that allows learners to individualize their education and share control in the running of the school.

Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn?

Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Do you know what the space invaders are in school? This post shows you how to identify them and remove them so you focus on learners and learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Chris Watkins, an independent consultant and leading authority on learning in the UK and former reader at The Institute of Education, London Centre for Leadership in Learning has helped us understand how to personalize learning by focusing on the learner first. He launched a new site, http://chriswatkins.net, where he uploaded over 150 of his articles, handouts, presentations and publications on learning. Watkins’ Key Issues http://chriswatkins.net/key-issues/ shows that learning is rarely a focus on classroom life. He identified three sources he calls “space invaders” that take up the space as teaching, performance and work instead of what they should be focusing on: LEARNING.

The idea of believing in yourself if you can or cannot do something holds significant implications both for learners and for us as educators in our journey to nurture high levels of skill and knowledge. First blog in series defining Learner Agency written collaboratively with the Institute of Personalized Learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Learner agency often gets missed in conversations on transforming the educational system. We have a sense of ‘agency’ when we feel in control of things that happen around us; when we feel that we can influence events. This is an important sense for learners to develop. Learners must understand:

  • when they need new learning and how to learn what they need
  • when they need to unlearn what will no longer serve them
  • when they need to relearn what they need to be successful
