Education Minister George Abbott released details about his plan for reforming B.C. education before a student audience. "Abbott says the plan is intended to make a good education system great. The key features are personalized learning, quality teaching, flexibility and choice, high standards and learning empowered by technology. Families will have more say in where, how, when and what their children study, and schools will strive to identify and assist struggling learners sooner."

Digital resources are helping teachers at a Sydney high school improve educational outcomes for multicultural students and provide round-the-clock learning opportunities. Arthur Phillip High School in Parramatta is a melting pot of cultures, with 56 nationalities represented including Iraq, Germany, South Korea, Egypt, Afghanistan and India. More than 90 per cent of its students are from non-English speaking backgrounds Principal Lynne Goodwin says a revolution is taking place – a digital learning revolution, triggered by the nationwide laptop rollout. She explains: “We’re meeting the children where they’re at [academically] and trying to provide a learning environment that is really 24/7. We’re watching students really carefully, seeing how they like to learn and then we’re trying to adapt how we work with them.”

This article gives insight into how school systems plan to teach to a diverse crowd. In this particular high school in Australia, 56 nationalities are represented. Those countries represented include Iraq, Germany, South Korea, Egypt, Afganistan and India. Because they have so many students that come from a non English speaking background, computers are necessary in order to do research to meet their needs educationally. This presents a different side of multicultural education. Teachers of the 21st century need to be ready to prepare lessons that deal with diversity as a topic and are inclusive of a variety of different cultures. Technology can be the biggest resources for this. Through the use of the internet, we can research cultures, art lesson ideas, art history and background information concerning those particular cultures, etc. This high school used the computers to successfully translate languages for better understanding between teacher and student as well.

Teachers who use instructional strategies related to assessment for learning and differentiated instruction already are tailoring instruction to individual students’ learning needs, interests and learning styles. But when strategies are paced to learning needs and coupled with technology as a means of providing more flexible learning opportunities, the learning becomes even more personalized. This flexible, student-centered approach may include teacher advisors and multiple teachers for each student, non-graded levels, online learning, blended learning, project-based learning, community involvement, competency-based assessment, and other elements."

The online standards aim to help teachers more effectively personalize learning for their students.

Oregon SSI sees personalized learning as an essential element in their Small Schools Initiative. In this article they have made a distinction between personalized learning and a personalized environment.

Signaling the need for a fundamental change in the way education is designed and delivered across secondary and postsecondary institutions, Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) announced on October 5th the availability of $12 million in grants for comprehensive models that apply technology to personalize students’ learning experiences, thereby improving the speed and depth by which they develop and master critical knowledge and skills.
