The store gained its fame by hosting African-American authors, poets, and musicians, such as Oprah Winfrey, Malcolm X, Earth Wind & Fire, Dave Chapelle, Toni Morrison, and Queen Latifah. The Richardsons created a place where people could learn about and enjoy Afrocentric culture, history, politics and literature.
