How to Teach your Kids about Money [FYI - Allowance Isn't One of Them] | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Do you know how to teach your kids about money? Think back to your childhood. Who taught you how to manage money? Who taught you to write a check? Who explained what compound interest is? You may have learned to write a check in Life Skills class in school or perhaps Mom and Dad showed you. And your parents may have even taught you to manage money. But I’m going to guess no one explained the more complicated stuff like compound interest. Heck, could you even explain it to your kids now? And yet, in many ways, our lives revolve

The argument for playing video games with our kids - CNN

The argument for playing video games with our kids - CNN | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
(CNN)There is, inevitably, a gap between the parents we are and the parents we think we are. Not unlike algorithms, we rely on the past to inform our parenting decisions in the present. But this world keeps on turning, and the parenting present is never quite like the past.

In his new book, "The New Childhood: Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World," Jordan Shapiro considers how this gap is playing out in our children's screen time. Many parents see themselves as dutiful, and at least occasionally wise, guides for their children. We help them make good decisions at school, with friends and on the sports field. But when it comes to digital lives, many kids tend to be steering the ship on their own.

Podcasts Designed For Kids Can Be A Fun Way to Ignite Imagination - MindShift

Podcasts Designed For Kids Can Be A Fun Way to Ignite Imagination - MindShift | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Since the unprecedented success of Serial, podcasts have become a more popular form of mainstream entertainment. Not only are many adults listening for fun, but some teachers are bringing podcasts into their classrooms as a new kind of text. Teachers like Alexa Schlechter, Michael Godsey and Alex Fernandez have found teenagers to be a receptive podcast audience and have even experimented with asking students to make their own podcasts.

While audio has excited teachers of older students who can access the rich variety of content available for adults, teachers and parents of younger children are noticing there isn’t a ton of content made specifically for a younger audience. In an article written for The Atlantic, Stephanie Hayes investigates this hole in the podcast market. She was surprised to find that kids will pay attention to a full 15-20 minute podcast and learn from it. Hayes writes:

The hidden dangers of technology.
Camila Ossa Castaño's curator insight, December 4, 2016 4:25 PM
Nowadays technology is a great tool that helps us in our life, in our work, in our study, etc. The internet is part of our lives and is very beneficial to us. As future teachers, we must show and tell our students all the benefits and advantages that the internet brings to our lives, but we must also make them aware that this if not used in a correct way can be dangerous for them. It is important to read and take into account these three ways to protect our students from the dangers of technology, because they often do not think about the consequences that can bring to their lives the content that they upload to the internet.  We need to make sure that our students get the most out of technology.

Elizabeth Segran:  "For generations of viewers, Sesame Street is a portal to a simpler, more innocent time in their lives. This creates something of a quandary for the show’s producers: how do you keep evolving a show so it doesn’t get stale without offending its devoted fans?"

David Collet's curator insight, September 17, 2014 7:19 PM

This one I have to rescoop. I am too old to have benefited from Sesame Street but that doesn't my life was not affected by it. This is technology used at its best and most effective. The message delivered has always been universal. And it has remained true to its original format. There is no mention of the creator of the series in this piece and I think that is a mistake. Sesame Street was done by a creative genius on a par with Steve Jobs.

Along with countless other sobering repercussions, COVID-19 jeopardizes kids’ physical activity at a time when the emotional benefits that exercise provides are sorely needed. With school closures, suspension of team practices and the imperative to stay home and away from others, children and teenagers (and their agitated parents) will have to find other ways to keep moving. This is especially important now, as a global pandemic with potentially catastrophic repercussions has a way of igniting fear.

How Kids Benefit From Learning To Explain Their Math Thinking

How Kids Benefit From Learning To Explain Their Math Thinking | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Math teachers of older students sometimes struggle to get students to explain their thinking with evidence. It’s hard to get kids in the habit of talking about how they are thinking about a problem when they’ve had many years of instruction that focused on getting the “right answer.” That’s why educators are now trying to get students in the habit of explaining their thinking at a young age. The Teaching Channel captured kindergarten and first grade teachers pushing students to give evidence for their answers in situations where there are several ways to think about a problem.

Kids And Screen Time: What Does The Research Say?

Kids And Screen Time: What Does The Research Say? | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Kids read emotions better after spending several days without electronic media, according to new research.

The UCLA researchers studied two groups of sixth-graders from a Southern California public school. One group was sent to the Pali Institute, an outdoor education camp in Running Springs, Calif., where the kids had no access to electronic devices. For the other group, it was life as usual.

At the beginning and end of the five-day study period, both groups of kids were shown images of nearly 50 faces and asked to identify the feelings being modeled. Researchers found that the students who went to camp scored significantly higher when it came to reading facial emotions or other nonverbal cues than the students who continued to have access to their media devices.
