Canada. The State of Women’s Entrepreneurship in Canada 2023: Research Preview

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for almost 90% of private sector employment in Canada. Entrepreneurs play a critical role not only in job creation and driving innovation and growth, but also in advancing social development and sustainability. Women entrepreneurs often face heightened barriers and have borne a disproportionate burden of the COVID-19 pandemic’s devastating impact; however, government, industry and other stakeholders worldwide are committed to advancing their success.

New research this year highlights the importance of rethinking how we assess the economic impact of SMEs generally and women entrepreneurs in particular. Additionally, there is continued evidence of broader contributions to the United Nations sustainable development goals and net-zero priorities. Canada’s unique Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES) has provided a “whole of government” approach to support diverse women entrepreneurs. The strategy focuses on three major components: access to capital; strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem; and knowledge and research, which includes the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH) to provide evidence to shape policy and practice.

Ghana. Re-Imagining policy discourses concerning the participation of young women in STEM-related TVET in Ghana

Ghana. Re-Imagining policy discourses concerning the participation of young women in STEM-related TVET in Ghana | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
As technical and vocational education and training (TVET) continue to occupy a prominent position in Africa’s development, addressing the growing concerns about young women’s under-participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related TVET has become urgent. This paper draws on the critical capability approach of vocational education and training (CCA-VET) to critique the TVET policy discourse on the participation of girls and women in STEM-related TVET. The paper employed the practical argumentation approach, a critical discourse analysis approach to achieve the paper’s aims. The paper’s central thesis is that for education policies to transform young women’s under-participation in STEM-related TVET, it is urgent to move beyond human rights-based, and human capital approaches to adopt a comprehensive theoretical approach, such as the critical capabilities approach. The paper concludes that breaking this hegemony of human rights and human capital approaches to TVET policy can be achieved by re-conceptualising TVET policy discourses. The re-conceptualisation of TVET policy discourses can be achieved by admitting the critiques of these dominant theories that underpin most TVET policies and then adopting the CCA-VET as a better alternative approach to framing TVET policies.

Emily Pilloton-Lam: What if women built the world they want to see?

Only four percent of construction workers are female -- that's totally unacceptable, but it's also a huge opportunity both for women and for the trades, says youth educator and builder Emily Pilloton-Lam. She makes the case for putting power (and power tools) into the hands of young women and gender-expansive youth, dreaming of inclusive construction sites and daring to ask: What if women built the world they want to see?

How Women in Leadership Can Shape the Future of Work

How Women in Leadership Can Shape the Future of Work | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
The timing is right for everyone to recognize women’s contributions to workplace well-being. But recognition rarely happens by accident. For female leaders to elevate and be recognized for their innate skills, they must first think about the interactions where they’ve used listening, empathy and collaboration successfully and then create a clear plan to advance each skill. With a plan, they’ll have greater confidence in their abilities and will not fall prey to the feeling that they need to know more before jumping into new territory.

Australians are not facing a dystopian future of rising unemployment, aimless career paths and empty offices, as some futurists claim. Quite the opposite in fact, according to a new report.

In an account that would apply to most other countries around the globe, the report’s writers argue that the “future of work is human – provided those humans use technology to their advantage to create more meaningful work”.

Education and skills for women's integration into the labour market: a comparative analysis of eight sub-Saharan African countries | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

This paper seeks to shed light on the current challenges faced by eight selected sub-Saharan African countries, namely Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, in achieving the integration of women into the labour market through education and training. In almost all these countries – except Sierra Leone – women are less likely to be employed than men. Moreover, most employed women have insecure, low-paying, and informal jobs. In addition, women performing these jobs are hardly protected against job losses. The lack of protection is also apparent in times of illness and when they are ageing. More women are concentrated in occupations and sectors that are characterized by low status and low remuneration. Furthermore, they continue to be underrepresented and excluded from sectors and jobs that involve greater responsibility, pay more salaries, and offer potential for growth. The reasons for the under-representation of women in prestigious jobs are varied and are rooted on factors such as gender norms and stereotypes, unpaid care at home, and legal frameworks that are unfavourable to women. This paper aims to present a diagnosis of women’s situation in terms of their integration into the labour market. It will focus mainly on the role played by education and training in attaining gender parity and identify practices that will potentially address the marginalization of women in the labour market

This qualitative phenomenological study describes the experiences of female students in a rural Alberta vocational training centre through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate five key ways that instructors and institutions can approach instruction to maximize the opportunity for early and sustained student engagement: a sense of belonging and feeling of community, relationships with instructors, consistent and clear organization and structure, the recognition of student success, and the opportunity to explore new skills and careers.

While women were not doing as well as men in research and academia in terms of absolute numbers and in terms of leadership positions, opportunities to thrive in universities were relatively more even.
