South Africa. TVET engineering students’ perceptions of the value of their qualification and the prospects of employment

South Africa. TVET engineering students’ perceptions of the value of their qualification and the prospects of employment | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

The study explored how selected TVET engineering students from two colleges in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province viewed their qualifications and employment prospects in the light of youth unemployment in general and among TVET graduates.

“While the unemployment rate among South Africans with a tertiary qualification stood at 7%, it appeared to be a staggering 33% among TVET graduates in 2017,” the authors wrote.

The main findings are:

• 34 students perceived there is a high demand for a TVET engineering qualification;

• The perception of most of the students (79) is that a TVET qualification does not guarantee employment;

• A qualification counts for more than experience; and

• Job scarcity is more of a problem than a lack of skills.

The role of qualifications and end point assessment in apprenticeships: an international comparison

If an apprenticeship is to have credibility and worth for both individuals and employers, it must end up with a recognised qualification. And why would you have an apprenticeship without any formal assessment and feedback as part of that process? Assessment is a critical part of learning and improving

Canada. Plugging the skills gap in engineering

Canada. Plugging the skills gap in engineering | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
There’s no denying it: the world is currently experiencing a shortage of engineers. The shortage isn’t limited to a single country, either. Nations worldwide are reporting shortages in a variety of engineering fields. In Canada, there are a little over 250,000 currently employed engineers. Experts estimate that by 2020, approximately 95,000 of those engineers will reach retirement. With engineering programs churning out approximately 12,000 new engineers each year, there simply isn’t enough talent to replace retiring engineers.

US. Engineers‟ Perceptions of Diversity and the Learning Environment at Work: A Mixed Methods Study

Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Women and people of color are particularly underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) disciplines. This mixed methods study surveyed engineers to examine the current culture climate for diversity in engineering worksites, and how gender, race, and age intersect and affect engineers‘ perceptions of organizational inclusiveness and the learning environment surrounding diversity.

UK. Apprenticeship diversity in engineering is an issue we must all take seriously | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

More than half of the population is female, yet just 3% of engineering apprenticeship completions are by females. Just 4% of engineering apprentices are from a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background despite 13% of the UK population being from one. A fifth of the UK population has a disability but only a tenth of apprentices do.

Canada. The disjuncture of learning and recognition: Licensure-related credential assessment from the standpoint of Chinese immigrant engineers in Canada

Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Non/recognition of foreign credentials has been criticized for obstructing skilled immigrants from succeeding in the Canadian labour market. Drawing on an institutional ethnographic study of the credential assessment practices in the engineering profession, the study problematizes the redundant and ad hoc assessment procedures, licensure bodies‘ narrow focus on applicants‘ undergraduate education, and their deficit approach to training from other countries.
