Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The UDL Institute will take place at CAST in Wakefield, MA on Nov 14th and 15th and will focus on apply UDL guidelines in practice including:

> Connections between learning and neuroscience

> The three UDL principles and related benchmarks and checkpoints

> The curriculum framework of goals, methods, materials, and assessment as a structure for designing lessons

> Examples of practice that illustrate alignment of UDL to curriculum

> Hands-on exploration of technologies that support UDL

> Understanding that UDL is a change initiative

UDL for ALL: Matt Bergman's Ed Tech 2.0 Blog: Move Over Brittanica and Make Room for Life

UDL for ALL: Matt Bergman's Ed Tech 2.0 Blog: Move Over Brittanica and Make Room for Life | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Matt Bergman describes how Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) can be used to support the three UDL principles in a science lesson.  He clearly articulates how easily a teacher can use this online tool to provide multiple means of representation, expression and engagement in their lesson.  Here are his concluding remarks:

"When our students are able to connect with different ways of representing material, expressing their knowledge, and engaging with content, we are creating a successful lesson or unit. No matter what format you use, incorporating the elements of UDL can enhance any type of lesson plan format!"

Thank you, Matt!

A District Implements UDL with a Focus on Improving Instruction

A District Implements UDL with a Focus on Improving Instruction | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation is an example where UDL has been implemented across the district with the focus on "improving instruction".  Included on this site are a set of videos and podcasts that features how UDL principles are being implemented in the classroom with all students.

"In 2003, Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC), an Indiana district serving 11,000 students, began implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in a single pilot school. Today, UDL principles are applied to one degree or another in all of the district’s 19 schools, first begun as part of a statewide UDL initiative called the PATINS project."

Why bring UDL into your district?

"In this excerpt George Van Horn (District Director of Special Education Services) stresses that he along with Bill Jensen (Director of Secondary Education) and Karen Garrity (Director of Elementary Education) were all focused on improving instruction. They had already adopted inclusionary practices for their district and, rather than add on services, the next leap forward needed to come from a focus on improving core instruction. UDL aligned with their core beliefs."

UDL and Transition

UDL and Transition | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it
This week’s session in the UDL course focused on UDL in transition planning.  This really hit home for me as I have been supporting my teenage daughter with significant disabilities through postsec...
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

A father shares how the UDL lens helped in developing a transition plan for his daughter, Brooke. Discover how each UDL principle was used in developing that plan.  Here is just the first:

Principle 1: provide multiple means of representation

>> Connected Brooke with volunteer opportunities at a dog rescue and kennel to explore hands on what it means to be in a career working with animals, and used a guitar, youtube videos, and iPad apps for pianos, to explore her interest in music

>> Explored www.alife4me.org for community career ideas.

You won't want to miss this if you help with transitions.

UDL Unplugged - The Role of Technology in UDL | National Center On UDL

UDL Unplugged - The Role of Technology in UDL | National Center On UDL | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

"This paper examines the question of whether technology is central to the foundations of UDL or whether UDL is useful as a pedagogical framework that goes beyond technology. This paper uses the UDL guidelines as a structural framework through which to examine these questions."

Download the summary of this article where a lesson is examined through the lens of the three principles of UDL.  Discover how these principles can be easily incorporated in the design of the lesson.
