With the "Cayman" GPU architecture from AMD came two very good video card models : the Radeon HD 6950 and the 6970. These have both been excellent sellers for AMD and product partners. ASUS Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II Overclocked : It seems that every time we turn around there a new PC component that is new to the market that we must have. Just recently we see that AMD just received a new processor featuring quad-cores, Intel is right around the corner (we hope) with their new offering and before we can blank we will probably be seeing new Radeon 7xxx series graphic cards as well as Nvidia 7xx family models. Don’t get me wrong I am a big fan of upgrading...
Microsoft have said that they will be launching a version of their best selling productivity suite Office on the Ipad. Microsoft will probably break out the apps from the suite and sell them separately and will probably make quite a lot of money. This is however a major double edged sword for Microsoft if they take this approach. On one hand, the Ipad is the tablet juggernaut to beat and if Microsoft can get those users on Office, it is a substantial amount of revenue for the company. On the other hand, once Ipad users are on Office, you have just removed a MAJOR incentive for anyone to buy a Windows 8 Tablet. You have also removed the one selling point...

In a seminar held at CERN yesterday (13 December 2011), the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented the status of their searches for the Standard Model Higgs boson. Their results are based on the analysis of considerably more data than those presented at the summer conferences, sufficient to make significant progress in the search for the Higgs boson, but not enough to make any conclusive statement on the existence or non-existence of the elusive Higgs. The main conclusion is that the Standard Model Higgs boson, if it exists, is most likely to have a mass constrained to the range 116 - 130 GeV by the ATLAS experiment, and 115 -127 GeV by CMS. Tantalising...
As many outsiders thought would happen, RIM has delayed the launch of its next-generation BlackBerry devices that make use of its new QNX-based operating system. On a conference call with analysts, RIM co-CEOs said that, for a variety of reasons, the company has pushed out the release. In particular, Balsillie said the company has selected a chipset that won’t be available until mid-2012, meaning its first devices won’t be available until “the latter part” of 2012. The new chipset will allow greater power efficiency and allow for a better industrial design, RIM said. “We ask for your patience and confidence,” co-CEO Jim Balsillie said on a conference call...
One of the challenges that Microsoft spent a lot of time thinking about while planning Windows 8 was how to help their customers manage their digital identity in a way that is both convenient and secure. In today's world, there are a number of very interesting details with respect to digital identities, how they are used, and how they are protected. Currently, the most common way people verify their digital identity is by using a password. Passwords are used to sign in to your computer, to your bank, to web merchants, and lots of other places. Our research has shown us that the average person using a PC in the United States typically has about 25 online accounts....

According to the Taiwanese news agency DigiTimes, tech giant Apple, Inc. (NYSE : AAPL) will be releasing its much - awaited next generation of iPad in the next three to four months. DigiTimes reported that their sources from the Apple's supply chain said that the production for the iPad 3 ramped up and the production of current generation of iPad decreased. Specifically, the source of the news agency confirmed that OEM production of the iPad 2 will remain high, producing 14 to 15 million units by the fourth quarter of 2011 but will drastically decline to 4 to 5 million units on the first quarter of 2012 to pave the way for the new iPad. The production...
A change that was made to the App Store, possibly on the 16th of December, was causing problems for iPhone and iPod touch owners running iOS 3.1.1 on their devices. The problems were not being able to download apps – clicking on their price, other buttons such as ratings were also broken, and some app screenshots weren’t available. Over on the Apple Support Communities, an initial post by one affected iPhone 3GS owner has already grown to several pages, as users reported their own experiences. While Apple can’t keep supporting older devices forever, these problems seem more like a glitch rather than an active move to end support. Eventhough now it seems Apple has fixed...
Scientists have discovered that one of the most abundant materials deep inside the Earth can change how it conducts electricity without changing its structure. This discovery could forever change how we understand the Earth's interior and impacts our planet's magnetic field - something scientists have never been able to completely explain. Ronald Cohen of Carnegie's Geophysical Laboratory co-authored the study and found when extreme heat and pressure were applied to the iron oxide (the second-most abundant material in the Earth's lower mantle), it changed how it conducted electricity without the metal changing its structure. Normally, a change in conductivity would...
Almost everyone is familiar with the annoying need to replace the battery or to charge it. It can be the laptop during a presentation, a wireless or cellular phone stopping during a very important conversation with a customer, or a camera in the middle of taking pictures. There are endless incidents of that kind that we face as consumers and users. In Industrial Electronics there are many, most harmful battery failures, causing disturbances and security threats. From one side, batteries are not capable supplying high current pulses, from the other side most communication devices are power hungry, demanding high current pulses. Batteries are aimed to supply voltage continuously...

Even though PCI Express 3.0 is still several months away, PCI Express 4.0 is already in the works and some basic specifications of the interconnection technologies are already known. The maximum bandwidth of the fourth generation of PCIe interconnect will be 16GT/s per lane. There will also be a number of new features implemented. "The initial report we got yesterday is a PCI Express 4.0 is feasible - we have to work out the details, but it is feasible," said Al Yanes, president of the PCI SIG, reports EETimes. The group, which leads the development, includes AMD, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Intel. It is reported that the companies are already conducting simulations...

German engineering outshines every other automobile making nation simply because they are so good at it. But an enthusiastic German automotive part maker, Ralf Drendel, obsessed with V12 engines has upped the ante on the miniature scale, so to speak. Made perfectly to emulate the real thing (V12 engine) the miniature V12 is designed to function perfectly with any high-end RC (Remote Controlled) vehicle; be it a RC plane, boat or car. Having 12 cylinders housed inside a four stroke engine runs on a mixture of high performance synthetic lubricant (10%), Methanol and Nitro methane (5-10%) and produces power of 6 to 8 horsepower with a displacement of 87-cubic centimeters. This...
Almost a month ago, we talked about flexible paper thin AMOLED and transparent displays. Samsung Mobile Display, produced recently, a new short Video (in Korean) showing a transparent, flexible 3D AMOLED display based tablet. This is obviously just a concept device, and it'll take years before they'll be able to commercialize something like that, but it's still very cool. Flexible OLEDs are still not available, but Samsung does plan to start producing these in 2012. The first screens will probably not be bendable ones, but Samsung will be able to produce them on curved surfaces. Several other companies (including Sony, AUO, LG, HP, Toshiba, TDK and others)...

Microsoft are developing a new Operating System that will eventually replace Windows 7 and of course as you know by now, it’s called Windows 8. As you have probably heard, Windows 8 is the most radical, risky, innovative and original re-imagining of the Windows franchise that Microsoft have ever done. They have taken every piece of the traditional Windows Operating System apart and put it back together in a very creative package. You, the public will tell Microsoft whether this experiment has been successful when it is released. If you want to know what’s coming in Windows 8, these are the cliff notes on this page. Here are some of the features that are coming...
Google will release a flagship Android tablet in the next six months to challenge Apple’s iPad, it's chairman Eric Schmidt has revealed. In an echo of the firm’s smartphone strategy, whereby its own Nexus range forms the vanguard of the Android attack on the iPhone, Mr Schmidt said Google is developing a tablet. “In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality,” he told an Italian newspaper. Google has already had a hand in the development of the Motorola Xoom, but like other Android tablets, it suffered disappointing sales in a market dominated by the iPad. Since then, however, Google has itself become a major hardware manufacturer...
Think of it as the ultimate slow - motion movie camera. Researchers at M.I.T. have developed an imaging system so fast it can trace the motion of pulses of light as they travel through liquids and solids. To put it into perspective, writes John Markoff in The New York Times, “If a bullet were tracked in the same fashion moving through the same fluid, the resulting movie would last three years.” The research was directed by Ramesh Raskar of the Camera Culture group at the M.I.T. Media Lab. In an abstract, the research team writes : We have built an imaging solution that allows us to visualize the propagation of light. The effective exposure time of each frame...
