Yes, You Can Measure White Privilege

Yes, You Can Measure White Privilege | The 21st Century | Scoop.it
Whenever anyone slips the words “white privilege” into a conversation, it immediately builds an impenetrable wall. For some white people, the words elicit an uneasy feeling because, for them, the term is accusatory without being specific. It is a nebulous concept that seemingly reduces the complex mishmash of history, racism and social phenomena to a nonspecific groupthink phrase.

The author in his article highlights that for many white people, the term white privilege elicits a response of uneasiness. This is because the term is perceived by many white people to group them into one that is shared with racists and people believing in white superiority.

However in looking at the term further, it becomes evident in the author's eyes, that the term can be used as a noun with a single definition and that white privilege is actually quantifiable. He highlights statistics found in select areas of the United States that clearly show the systemic anchor it has become. It has slowed down progress significantly for minority groups in the USA, in terms of education, class, employment rates, expenses (minorities end up paying more on average for the same item versus other groups) and also pay gaps (which have actually widened instead of diminished recently).

This clearly illustrates that this is an ongoing problem and the author hopes that by quantifying the above, there is hope that the uneasy feelings, taboos and misconceptions on the term can be dispelled and the root of the problem and be addressed.
