Nice mindmap by Stephen Downes, but I really don't see any difference between this chart and the role of the teacher for the past 50 years. Nor should there be! Good teaching is GOOD TEACHING regardless of the technology.

9 New Skills You Need To be a 21st Century Educator | Online Universities

9 New Skills You Need To be a 21st Century Educator | Online Universities | The 21st Century | Scoop.it

Some of these skills, of course, are holdovers from the 20th century which have grown more refined or essential as the calendar clicked. But education professionals still tout them as desirable — if not outright necessary — components of contemporary classrooms. Probably more so than any other era of academic history. So they’re "new" when it comes to importance, if not concept.

Jessica Guercio's curator insight, February 19, 2014 9:03 PM

A great blog post describing different skills that are important to be an effective teacher in this day in age. Gives a lot of great tools and advice for teachers to stay connected and use new tools they made not have used in the classroom before.

Digital learning: how to keep your students switched on

Digital learning: how to keep your students switched on | The 21st Century | Scoop.it
Delivering teaching online is increasingly important for academics, but it needs to be more than a content dump
Heidi Ellis's curator insight, May 21, 2017 3:11 AM
Action and consistency key in online learning
Some really interesting thoughts in here. I can see how it might be tempting to simply drop students into an online environment and let them run loose, but it's important for them to know why they are doing this; and what's the learning outcome? Consistency would certainly help them to feel supported and more in control too. I feel that authentic context which delivers a learning outcome that is far beyond a simply alternative to a worksheet/text book is essential for online learning - just because it's on a computer/device doesn't instantly make it more engaging than a paper-based task!
Robert Heyman's curator insight, May 25, 2017 7:30 PM
This article, rescooped via classmate Heidi Ellis' curated collection, is written jounalist for 'The Guardian', Leonard Huox. The article discusses way in which delivering teaching online needs to be more than just a 'content dump', and the need to add value and avoid the risk of miscommunication in distance/online learning.

Several techniques are explained to engage students in online study, including keeping it simple (bullet points, small paragraphs, brief sentences etc., maintaining consistency in terms of style, due dates, formats and criteria.

Digital tools and modified and redefined learning tasks can be very successful in helping students stay switched on, and engage them in active learning by adding meaning to the way they learn. Through audio and visual learning, teachers can ensure information presented online is not just a 'content dump' and presents opportunities for students to learn new information in exciting ways.

Katelyn Muller's curator insight, June 1, 2017 6:37 AM
A very worthwhile read! This artefact provides numerous points on how to keep students engaged and provide meaning to their learning. The clear concise way this text was written made it easy to understand and establish key take home messages. Definitely an artefact that I would recommend all teachers to read, new and experienced.
