Source code of human vision recently cracked ~ Innovation Investment Journal

Source code of human vision recently cracked ~ Innovation Investment Journal | Science News | Scoop.it

Researchers have developed an artificial retina that has the capacity to reproduce normal vision in mice. While other prosthetic strategies mainly increase the number of electrodes in an eye to capture more information, this study concentrated on incorporating the eye’s neural “code” that converts pictures into signals the brain can understand. The research was presented at Neuroscience 2010, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the world’s largest source of emerging news about brain science and health.

Horizon presenter Adam Rutherford looks at the advances in synthetic biology and genetic engineering that have resulted in, among other things, computer-made life forms and cancer assassin cells...
Josh COok's curator insight, November 13, 2014 10:29 AM

This is absolutely amazing.  Having goats that make silk that we can use as a product for many things including medicine is remarkable.  If we do this with other animals, who knows what we could get animals to make that we can harvest and use.

A Theory That Explains Why Earth's Gravity Doesn't Crush Us All

A Theory That Explains Why Earth's Gravity Doesn't Crush Us All | Science News | Scoop.it

Gravity is strong enough to hold us to the surface of this planet, and powerful enough to make achieving orbit a tricky proposition. But why doesn't it crush us completely? It's because gravity is so much weaker than the other forces in the universe, something physicists have always struggled to explain.

Can Bacteria Solve the Mysteries of the Universe?

Can Bacteria Solve the Mysteries of the Universe? | Science News | Scoop.it

“Scientists keep trying to formulate a theory of everything, and all they get are headaches. Clearly we're overthinking things. Our brains are too complex to comprehend the underlying simplicity of the universe. Cyanobacteria are not burdened by all that gray matter.”

Which Direction Now? Just Ask the North-facing Map in Your Head - Association for Psychological Science | Science News | Scoop.it

“Our memory for our city of residence shows a map-like character,” says Meilinger, a research scientist at the institute. “And that map seems to be oriented towards the north.” Frankenstein adds: “At least in western societies, where maps are north-oriented, and people usually use maps and are able to read them, they can -and will- rely on their memory of city maps for certain spatial tasks.”

Friday Fun: Snowboarding Crow [video]

Friday Fun: Snowboarding Crow [video] | Science News | Scoop.it

This video (via Al Dove on twitter), which appears to be from Russia, shows a crow (can anybody confirm the identity of the bird?) engaging in an activity that can only be described as play. There is at least some scientific evidence (behind a paywall) that corvids, as well as some species of parrots and other social birds, do engage in play-like behaviors. This particular instance is remarkable as it does not only show play, but also a form of tool use!
