Scientists have determined that people in a relaxed state and a good mood are far more likely to develop innovative or creative thoughts. And companies are now taking advantage of this fact. Lehrer points to 3M, which started out making packaging tape and has now expanded into other sectors including electronics and pharmaceutical delivery. Companies like 3M allow their employees to have an hour a day to do whatever they want: work on a side project or tinker with a hobby.

It might be a child or an outsider who comes up with a brilliant new way to solve a problem, for example. Maybe it’s because experts know too much that they’ll stick with a familiar idea—like a familiar word—rather than coming up with something new. “To be creative, you need to use the knowledge related to the problem but not be biased to give the same answers that work for other problems.”
