Depression Linked with Sleep Breathing Problems, Study Finds

Depression Linked with Sleep Breathing Problems, Study Finds | Science News | Scoop.it
Experiencing breathing problems during sleep may raise your risk of depression, a new study suggests.
Morgan Rector's comment, February 26, 2013 2:08 PM
This article will help me prove that depression can be caused by other factors that may go unnoticed. Also, it can be caused by internal problems rather than external.
Mathilde Moulbach's curator insight, December 19, 2023 2:46 AM
There is a link between sleep apnea as well as other sleeping conditions and depression. Therefore, many people could be affected by both conditions and they both are a risk factor for developing one another. Indeed, we get a better grasp at comprehending the importance of a good night of sleep for one's mental health (just as much as physical health). Though this article is quiet old, other more recent and reliable research i found suggest the same results. Sleeping problems are involved in a very complex manner in the depression diagnosis.

UCLA researchers discover that the sleeping brain behaves as if it's remembering something | Science News | Scoop.it

UCLA researchers have for the first time measured the activity of a brain region known to be involved in learning, memory and Alzheimer's disease during sleep. They discovered that this part of the brain behaves as if it's remembering something, even under anesthesia, a finding that counters conventional theories about memory consolidation during sleep.

Julien Cuyeu's curator insight, September 24, 2014 9:51 AM

BBC Future column: Hypnic Jerks

BBC Future column: Hypnic Jerks | Science News | Scoop.it

As we give up our bodies to sleep, sudden twitches escape our brains, causing our arms and legs to jerk. Some people are startled by them, others are embarrassed. Me, I am fascinated by these twitches, known as hypnic jerks. Nobody knows for sure what causes them, but to me they represent the side effects of a hidden battle for control in the brain that happens each night on the cusp between wakefulness and dreams.

7 Technologies to Help You Sleep Better

7 Technologies to Help You Sleep Better | Science News | Scoop.it

Numerous studies have shown us how important sleep can be. Not only does it revitalize our bodies, it also gives the brain time to sort through all the information it has received throughout our hectic day. Sleep deprivation, and a lack of quality sleep, can lead to weight problems, high blood pressure, and a weaker immune system (amongst a host of other issues).

Do Unhatched Chicks Sleep and Wake In Their Eggs? | Science News | Scoop.it

You go to sleep at night, you wake up in the morning—the definition of sleep doesn’t seem so complicated.
