Activision Shows Animated Human That Looks So Real, It's Uncanny

Activision Shows Animated Human That Looks So Real, It's Uncanny | Science News | Scoop.it

Activision showed off the state of the art of real-time graphics on Wednesday, releasing this mind-boggling character demo. The character's skin, facial expressions and eyes look so real, it's uncanny.

When you watch this video, see if you think this character has reached the other side of what's commonly called the "uncanny valley," a term first uttered by early robotics guruMasahiro Mori in 1970. It describes the range of sophistication of animated graphics, from one side of the valley where human figures simply look unrealistic, to the middle of the valley — where they look just realistic enough to be creepy — to our side of the valley, where animation is indistinguishable from reality.

Whenever the uncanny valley is mentioned, the animation techniques from the November, 2004 movie Polar Express come to mind. Most viewers noticed the characters weren't quite photorealistic enough to keep them out of the creepy zone. But that was nearly 8 years ago, and graphics technology has made spectacular progress since then.

Une vidéo bluffante : ce monsieur est en réalité une animation réalisée par la société Activision.  Une reconstitution incroyable des expressions faciales, de la texture de la peau, etc.

The rings on the planet go 'round and 'round...

The rings on the planet go 'round and 'round... | Science News | Scoop.it
Recently I posted an image of two of Saturn's shepherd moons, Pandora and Prometheus, captured by Cassini in a face-off across the spindly F ring.
Sakis Koukouvis's insight:

In the animation you can see Pandora and Prometheus promenade around Saturn (detail at right) as well as a "spoke" of light material moving within the inner dark edge of the A ring. Also many clumps are visible in the thin F ring—caused by embedded moonlets and the gravitational influence of the shepherd moons.

Scientists from the University of Georgia Regenerative Bioscience Center used adult stem cells to produce a protein involved in bone healing gel. The putty provides full load bearing capabilities. Once its implanted into the site of a fracture bone, it rapidly restore a patient to ambulatory function while healing. Fracture Putty has already been proven to work in animals, and It could be two or more years until human studies are done.

[VIDEO] Micro-Sorting Device For Catching Roaming Cancer Cells

In this video, we see magnetically labeled circulating tumor cells (shown as yellow spheres), together with red, white and platelet cells, attempting to travel over an array of slanted ramps. The ramps act as speed bumps, slowing the tumor cells. As the tumor cells slow, the flow carries them along the length of the ramp, causing lateral displacement. After the tumor cells traverse an array of these ramps, they have sufficiently been displaced and can be continuously isolated from other cells in the sample.

This dataset shows how the global ocean's surface water temperatures vary over the course of few years. In addition to seeing the effects of the seasonal cycle, the viewer can see how surface ocean currents and eddies transport heat and water around the globe. The images were generated not from observations, but from a state-of-the-art computer model of Earth's climate created at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL).

If you watch this video normally, the moving circles in the first animation rotate while the shifting dots in the second clip follow a horizontal path. But if you look away and watch the movie out of the corner of your eye, the direction of motion will appear to change. In both cases, the moving objects seem to follow the direction of the background stripes.
