My Transformation as a Teacher

My Transformation as a Teacher | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Pernille Ripp, 7th grade teacher in WI, shares her transformation and pathways to personalized learning environments and passionate learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Pernille offers insight on why she embraces personalized learning after 6 years.  She points out that the journey she has taken to transform herself is really about the learners that she teaches. Here is an excerpt that says it all.

"Six years ago, I set out on a journey that would challenge my belief that education was an institution that could not be changed, but instead had to be blindly followed no matter the collateral damage in its wake. I now know that the day I started asking my learners what changes they needed to become more engaged learners, was the day that I made a difference in the way education can be used. Yet this change is fundamentally not about me. It is about the learners I teach and it is for them that we must embrace a more meaningful way of educating. Call it personalizing learning or some other title, but in the end, we must make the very education that we are stewards of become about the kids that we teach again."

School Superintendents Call for Education Transformation

School Superintendents Call for Education Transformation | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
The information age has already changed the ways students are taught, but superintendents say more changes are needed. Schaefer explained each student will need a personalized learning plan. You can't look at the regular classroom of today with 25 kids and see that happen. It's going to take some research and development to make this work," he said. "The personalized learning program will be based on three things, Schaefer explained. “What a child needs to know, how they learn best and what the student's interests are. If it's art that I love, and I need to learn fractions, and I learn best with hands-on learning, then that is the condition school will need to provide. We will continually need to group and regroup kids.”

Personalized Learning - CESA 1 Takes Bold Steps to Transform

Personalized Learning - CESA 1 Takes Bold Steps to Transform | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"The Institute has selected Personalized Learning as the transformative area on which to focus. We believe that personalizing the educational experience for students holds the greatest leverage to transform the current educational design and build capacity for dramatic improvement in the performance of the educational system."

They see several key characteristics in implementing personalized learning.  One of note is that "students co-create their own customized learning path".  Read on...

> Instruction is customized to individual learning styles and preferences and builds on learner strengths;

> Learning can take place anytime, everywhere utilizing a wide variety of delivery methods;

> Curriculum is dynamic, individually paced and acknowledges learner interests;

> Standards are rigorous, comprehensive and relevant; they provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, but do not dictate when or how students learn;

> Students are authentically engaged in their education experience; they co-create their own customized learning path;

> Teachers assume new roles (e.g. learning coordinators, facilitators and assessors) both individually and as part of instructional teams.
