My Transformation as a Teacher

My Transformation as a Teacher | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Pernille Ripp, 7th grade teacher in WI, shares her transformation and pathways to personalized learning environments and passionate learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Pernille offers insight on why she embraces personalized learning after 6 years.  She points out that the journey she has taken to transform herself is really about the learners that she teaches. Here is an excerpt that says it all.

"Six years ago, I set out on a journey that would challenge my belief that education was an institution that could not be changed, but instead had to be blindly followed no matter the collateral damage in its wake. I now know that the day I started asking my learners what changes they needed to become more engaged learners, was the day that I made a difference in the way education can be used. Yet this change is fundamentally not about me. It is about the learners I teach and it is for them that we must embrace a more meaningful way of educating. Call it personalizing learning or some other title, but in the end, we must make the very education that we are stewards of become about the kids that we teach again."

Breaking Down Our Change Strategy - Personalized Learning Initiative

Breaking Down Our Change Strategy - Personalized Learning Initiative | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The Institute @CESA #1 (Wisconsin) has developed a change strategy to guide their districts as they particpate in the Personalized Learning Initiative based on their "honeycomb model" that includes: learning and teaching; relationships and roles; and structures and policies.

In their first phase, teaching and learning is the focus.  Here are some key comments from this blog on personalizing learning:

"By personalizing the learning for each student, we create a circumstance where we can take advantage of individual learner strengths and address student needs as they occur rather than having to remediate later. Also, when we have a deep understanding of each learner, we can determine the correct blend of learning modalities and strategies to ensure success for each student."

About the 4 Key Components of Personalised Learning

About the 4 Key Components of Personalised Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The National College for School Leadership outlines the key components to personalised learning along with case studies, practical tools, reflective questions and the results of a national survey in the UK.

"Personalising learning is the process which empowers the learner, with appropriate support and advice, to decide what, where, when and how they learn.

Personalising learning balances the demands of the curriculum (content) with the work of the teacher (delivery) with the engagement of the individual learner. This is achieved by developing the engagement of learners in the management and design of their learning experiences."

The four specific strategies to support this shift are:

>  Learning how to learn

>  Teaching and learning strategies

>  Curriculum choice

>  Mentoring and support

The Future of Learning: Preparing for Change

The European Commission Joint Research Centre - Institute for Prospective Technological Studies has developed a report "The Future of Learning:  Preparing for Change".

"The overall vision is that personalisation, collaboration and informalisation (informal learning) are at the core of learning in the future. These terms are not new in education and training but will have to become the central guiding principle for organising learning and teaching in the future."

Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn?

Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Do you know what the space invaders are in school? This post shows you how to identify them and remove them so you focus on learners and learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Chris Watkins, an independent consultant and leading authority on learning in the UK and former reader at The Institute of Education, London Centre for Leadership in Learning has helped us understand how to personalize learning by focusing on the learner first. He launched a new site, http://chriswatkins.net, where he uploaded over 150 of his articles, handouts, presentations and publications on learning. Watkins’ Key Issues http://chriswatkins.net/key-issues/ shows that learning is rarely a focus on classroom life. He identified three sources he calls “space invaders” that take up the space as teaching, performance and work instead of what they should be focusing on: LEARNING.

Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization

Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Here's a chart that explains the differences between personalization, differentiation, and individualization. After some research on these terms, Barbara Bray and I were able to determine the differences between these terms in relationship to teaching and learning.

Thank you for your comment. Kathleen and I are looking for feedback on how educators are using this chart.
rwteam's comment January 23, 2012 2:07 PM
I am in Wisconsin and we are part of CESA 1 NxGL. I team teach with 42 kindergarten kids and we are using personalized learning. We are working through the tangles of being able to personalize with kids who are just learning to read, write and compute. It has always been a struggle to be able to differentiate the difference between true personalized learning vs. differentiation and individualization. You have done a beautiful job of creating a chart that makes this clearer for all stakeholders. This chart will be useful for helping colleagues, administration and parents see the true definition of personalized learning and the potential that it holds.
