Educational reform in the US and Finland

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Christine McCartney, a Distinguished Fulbright Award in Teaching is researching how Finnish teachers utilize authentic, on-going formative assessments in their classrooms on a daily basis. She has created a powerful presentation looking at the 60 year history of the educational trajectories that the US and Finland have taken.

She states: "While homogeneity in Finland certainly plays a role in the different trajectories of educational reform in the United States and Finland, a closer look reveals that there might be more at play."

Education reform in BC – Going from good to great

Education reform in BC – Going from good to great | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Education Minister George Abbott released details about his plan for reforming B.C. education before a student audience.

"Abbott says the plan is intended to make a good education system great. The key features are personalized learning, quality teaching, flexibility and choice, high standards and learning empowered by technology. Families will have more say in where, how, when and what their children study, and schools will strive to identify and assist struggling learners sooner."

"If You Build It": Design-Build-Transform - Education

"If You Build It": Design-Build-Transform - Education | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

From the director of WORDPLAY and I.O.U.S.A. comes a captivating look at a radically innovative approach to education.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

"If You Build It" film follows designer activists, Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller to rural Bertie County, the poorest in NC, where they work with local high school students to help transform both their community and their lives. Pilloton and Miller lead their students through a year-long design and build project that does more than just teach basic construction skills. It shows 10 teenagers the power of design-thinking to re-invent not just their town but their own sense of what's possible.

Jamie Ruppert's curator insight, February 13, 2014 10:32 AM

Personalize Learning: Who Controls the Learning?

Personalize Learning: Who Controls the Learning? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Personalized learning is not about technology and data; it is about the learner owning their learning and transforming how we teach and learn.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Why is the focus in education becoming all about technology tracking data? Tracking data is being framed around "personalized learning" or "personalized education" as a new educational reform movement. This is not new or revolutionary. Personalized learning is not about customization, adapting curriculum, personalizing education or personalizing instruction. Personalizing learning is not about reform. It is about transforming our current educational system.

Personalizing Education in a Standards-Based System | The Thinking Stick

Personalizing Education in a Standards-Based System | The Thinking Stick | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Jeff Utecht provides food for thought on personalizing education and what it means for the learner.

"Does it really matter that every child learns the same thing or at the same time? Or is it more important that they just become a learner? Learning how to learn, unlearn, and relearn and having the skills and the passion to make it happen.

What if it was just a school's mission and vision, or in my school's case, our Definition of Learning that drove learning in our schools. What if at the end of every year kids had to show this:

We value meaningful learning where students construct enduring understanding by developing and applying knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

Increased understanding is evidenced by students who:

> Explain its relevance
> Describe how it connects to or conflicts with prior learning
> Communicate it effectively to others
> Generalize and apply it effectively to new situations
> Reflect critically on their own and other's learning
> Ask questions to extend learning
> Create meaningful solutions

Do we care what class it happens in? Do we really care about the content? Or can we stand in awe of the great work our kids can produce when we make it personal and allow their passion to show through."
