Implementing Competency Education in K-12 Systems: Insights from Local Leaders | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Competency education, an educator-led reform, is taking root in schools and districts across the country. In some states, state leadership has cleared the path with policies to advance competency education, while others are transitioning with little or no supporting policy. At the same time, innovative school models are popping up all over the United States, …
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

CompetencyWorks released a new report today: Implementing Competency Education in K-12 Systems: Insights from Local Leaders, authored by Chris Sturgis, Principal of MetisNet. This paper describes effective district implementation strategies to convert traditional, one-size-fits-all models of education into more personalized, competency-based learning environments to meet students' needs.

This paper highlights strategies to engage, motivate, and teach all students to proficiency and mastery; depicts shifts in instruction toward deeper learning and meaningful assessments for learning; while exploring models of distributed leadership and educator empowerment.

Rethinking Learning as Experiential and Learner-Focused

Rethinking Learning as Experiential and Learner-Focused | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Ben Kestner, Middle School Principal at St. John's International School in Belgium, shares how to personalize learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Ben shared the curriculum that is experiential, learner-focused and based on these 7 MS competencies:

>> Self-Assessor: in health, mind, spirituality and organization

>>  Contributor: through empathy and understanding; making a difference to the surrounding world

>> Creator: being an innovator, designer and maker of new things

>> Communicator: with compassion through oral, written, visual, musical, non-verbal and dance.

>> Collaborator: team member, leading and negotiating, sharing

>> Explorer: showing curiosity, taking risks and experimenting

>> Thinker: creative, critical, analytical, broad minded

They came up with the 3 Big Ideas last year. For one week three times during the year, there are themes where learners self-direct their learning.

These competencies remind me of Gardner's 5 Minds for the Future.

Competency-Based: It's All about Learning NOT Time

Competency-Based: It's All about Learning NOT Time | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Fred Bramante explains why a good competency-based system will make a difference for all learners.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Be inspired by Fred Bramante who leads the fight to move to a competency-based system. In a recent TedTalk, he demonstrates the passion he has for competency-based learning and extended learning opportunities (ELO's). He wants every learner to find their passion and have a mentor that can help them realize their hopes and dreams.

When asked what personally drives him to want to change education as we know it, he shares a personal experience that may can identify with: "School taught me that I wasn't very bright. Life taught me that school was wrong."

As a co-author of "Off the Clock" with Rose Colby, he believes that "a good competency-based system will make a difference for all learners because they will be learning what they love instead of trying to jump through traditional school hoops."

Antonia Rudenstine's curator insight, August 30, 2013 9:34 AM

This recent TEDTalk by the author of Off the Clock. Fred Bramante is one of the fiercest advocates for a competency-based system, arguling that school will work best when it is personal for each learner.

Roundtable on Personalised Learning (through the BCASCD)

Roundtable on Personalised Learning (through the BCASCD) | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"On Thursday, November 3rd, 2011, members of the Metro Vancouver education community from a range of perspectives met to address the big questions around Personalised Learning. As an organization, BCASCD promotes the exemplary practices in curriculum and develops leadership and professional capacity for the success of all learners. As such, a roundtable on Personalised Learning was held. The executive invited educators from a range of districts and on various pathways of their careers in education, including student-teachers, classroom teachers, district support teachers, vice-principals, principals, district principals, post-secondary teacher-educators, and senior administrators.

Four areas around Personalised Learning were discussed, with the intent of creating a working document demonstrating what Personalised Learning may look like at a class, school, district and provincial level."

These areas were:

> Stakeholders:  Who are they?  What are their needs?

> Competencies/skills/knowledge: What are the ‘must-haves’? What are the ‘would-like-to-haves’?

> Assessment/Reporting: How does Personalised Learning change reporting schedules, assessments (AFL) and student engagement;

> Structures: What are the environmental/space/time requirements.

Read about what ideas emerged from this roundtable discussion as British Columbia embarks on implementing personalised learning in their province.
