Continuum of Ownership: Developing Autonomy

Continuum of Ownership: Developing Autonomy | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
The Continuum of Ownership demonstrates how learners move from compliance to autonomy as they become responsible and drive their learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Introducing the Continuum of Ownership. Discover how learners can move from compliance to autonomy.

Chris Watkins, an independent consultant and leading authority on meta-learning in the UK and former reader at The Institute of Education, London Centre for Leadership in Learning makes these four points of what happens when learners drive the learning. When learners drive their learning,
  • it leads to greater engagement and intrinsic motivation for them to want to learn,
  • learners setting a higher challenge for themselves,
  • learners evaluating their own work, and
  • better problem-solving skills.

Making Sense of Learning

Making Sense of Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Chris Watkins, a reader at The Institute of Education in London wrote "Learning: a sense-makers guide" that provides four teaching practices that help learners make sense of their learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Learning can make sense and is similar to how we make sense of other things. We do it gradually through experiences and building knowledge as we go. Talking, thinking, and reflecting about learning are the key factors to understanding. In the sense-makers guide,  Watkins writes that there are four teaching practices that can help learners make sense of their learning:

> Notice learning

> Have conversations about learning

> Reflect on your learning

> Make learning an object of learning.

Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn?

Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Do you know what the space invaders are in school? This post shows you how to identify them and remove them so you focus on learners and learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Chris Watkins, an independent consultant and leading authority on learning in the UK and former reader at The Institute of Education, London Centre for Leadership in Learning has helped us understand how to personalize learning by focusing on the learner first. He launched a new site, http://chriswatkins.net, where he uploaded over 150 of his articles, handouts, presentations and publications on learning. Watkins’ Key Issues http://chriswatkins.net/key-issues/ shows that learning is rarely a focus on classroom life. He identified three sources he calls “space invaders” that take up the space as teaching, performance and work instead of what they should be focusing on: LEARNING.
