Growing Sustainable Personalized Learning Environments

Growing Sustainable Personalized Learning Environments | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Building a system of personalized learning environments takes a process and time. Check out this four year model to build a sustainable system.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Moving to a Personalized Learning Environment (PLE) is a culture shift. Moving an entire district or a region to a system with sustainable PLEs takes time and a process. PLEs are built on a human infrastructure with groups of people where some may be definitely ready and others resistant. Those that are ready may still hesitate to jump in unless they have the support and resources they need when they need it.

Teacher and Learner Roles Change in 1:1 Personalized Learning Environments

Teacher and Learner Roles Change in 1:1 Personalized Learning Environments | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Technology, especially mobile devices, allows learning to feel more personal. Being connected to the content with these devices offers opportunities for anyone to learn anywhere anytime. Yet, just providing technology to learners doesn’t mean that learning is personalized.

Teacher and learner roles change in a Stage One Persoanlized Learning Environment (PLE).

Teacher
- Knows how the learner learns best.
- Redesigns the learning environment.
- Integrates technology.
- Designs assessment strategies.
- Recognizes high-quality resources.

Learner
- Establishes learning goals with teacher.
- Creates a personal learning plan.
- Chooses how to access content.
- Has a voice expressing what they know.
- Selects the way to engage with content.

Personalize Learning - A Student Voice: Freedom to Choose a Learning Path

Personalize Learning - A Student Voice: Freedom to Choose a Learning Path | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Personalized learning has been discussed, analyzed and debated among educators from every perspective. In most cases, we agree that student voice and choice is a key ingredient in creating personalized learning environments. Last spring, a senior from Kettle Moraine School District was invited to be a guest blogger on The Institute @ CESA #1 blog to share her thoughts about personalized learning. Gillian Locke, a senior at KM Global Charter School, shared her perspective on the advantages she had in participating in a personalized learning environment and in owning her learning.

Here is just one excerpt from this insightful blog:

"Unlike most seniors in high school, I have the freedom to choose what I want to do when I wake up each morning. I am not limited to an 8 hour bell schedule like my peers, nor does my learning stop when I drive off the high school parking lot at 2:30 pm."

Thank you Gillian for giving a student voice to personalized learning.

Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Personalizing learning for all learners means understanding the different stages of personalized learning environments (PLE). Stage One is teacher-centered with learner voice and choice. Stage Two is when teachers co-design learning with the learners. Stage Three is when learners design and drive their own learning.

Personalize your learning environment

Personalize your learning environment | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Transforming a traditional classroom into a personalized learning environment takes a process. Personalized learning experts Barbara Bray and Kathleen McClaskey tell you how you can set it in motion.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Personalized learning is built on the idea that each learner is unique and learns in different ways. This is called variability in learning. To support all learners’ unique needs and preferences, learning environments have to be flexible. It takes a process to transform learning environments and change learner and teacher roles.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, July 3, 2014 9:00 PM

University learners need to be similarly considered.  There is very little ubiquity of prior experience with such diverse intakes - Plan to shift from pedagogy to andragogy to heutagogy.  Student needs shift from early engagement where pedagogy (teacher direction) is the norm, to andragogy where the role of the teacher shifts to facilitating student engagement in the processes of learning, to heutagogy where students define and organise their own learning requirements.

Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (v3)

Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (v3) | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (version 2) was updated from feedback and input from educators around the world.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) needed to be updated again. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received from participants in our 5 W's of Personalized Learning eCourse about our first and second versions of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage? We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version three that we hope will be the final version.-

The Blueprint to Build Sustainable Personalized Learning Environments

The Blueprint to Build Sustainable Personalized Learning Environments | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The Blueprint is the foundation, framework, and direction in building Personalized Learning Environments (PLEs) that transform teaching and learning and are sustainable over time.

Everyone in the school community is involved in the vision. Teachers are learners too. When you change the learning environment, teacher and learner roles change. Assessment is essential to measure progress and effectiveness of teaching and learning in the different Stages of Personalized Learning Environments. Assessment is conducted through each phase.

> Vision and Plan
Phase One lays the foundation for your Personalized Learning Environments (PLEs). The key is to lay a foundation built on trust and respect from all stakeholders so there is a shared vision and common language around personalized learning.

> Implement and Coach
Phase Two creates the framework with all the elements you need to build Personalized Learning Environments (PLEs) in your schools and/or districts.

> Expand and Sustain
Phase Three provides the direction to expand and sustain personalized learning for all learners.

CEM Blog Series: Stages of Personalized Learning Environments

CEM Blog Series: Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Join us on Thursday, August 16th at 1PM ET in Session 2 of Personalize Learning Blog Series when we discuss the Stages of Personalized Learning Environments.

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments outlines the elements of the three stages of PLE's. In attempting to transform teaching and learning to personalized learning, consider where you are currently and envision which stage you can see feasible for your school, district or community. Participate in this blog to discuss the stages and where you may be currently and where you would like to go.

We came up with these questions to consider before embarking on your journey to personalize learning:

> Why do you want to personalize learning for your learners?

> What problems or needs have you identified in your school, organization and/or community?

> What data can you show that demonstrates the need to personalize learning?

> What does teaching and learning look like now?

> What are stakeholders beliefs about learning and change?

> Why is it critical for your organization and/or community to change now?

> What challenges or obstacles do you envision as you move to personalizing learning?

> What do you envision for your personalize learning environment?

"An Amazing Year!" with Personalized Learning from The Institute @ CESA #1

"An Amazing Year!" with Personalized Learning from The Institute @ CESA #1 | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Jim Rickabaugh, the Executive Director of The Institute @ CESA #1 shares their webinar on RtI and Personalized Learning and what they have experienced in year 2 of creating personalized learning environments.  Here are some of his  comments from the May 2012 newsletter

"More importantly, the evidence is growing that students not only thrive socially and emotionally in a personalized learning environment, their achievement is growing at a pace faster than is typical in traditional education programs. Students are accelerating beyond the curriculum designed for their grade levels while students who traditionally have struggled are learning faster and better in response to instruction that is calibrated to meet their needs."

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) Version One chart needed to be updated. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received after posting our first version of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage?

We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version two. Some districts shared with us that our version one was going to be their foundation of their personalized learning initiative. We wanted to refine it so it was clear, consistent, and easily understood. We went to work to update the stages for them and anyone else moving to a personalized learning environment.

Please feel free to download version two and let us know how it supports your transformation to personalizing learning.
