Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (v3)

Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (v3) | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (version 2) was updated from feedback and input from educators around the world.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) needed to be updated again. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received from participants in our 5 W's of Personalized Learning eCourse about our first and second versions of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage? We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version three that we hope will be the final version.-

RtI in a Personalized Learning Environment

RtI in a Personalized Learning Environment | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Response to Intervention (RtI) can target each learner's needs when they need it as they need it.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Instead of waiting until a learner fails, you can target each learner's specific learning needs when they need it as they need it. In fact, in a Personalized Learning Environment, learners own and drive their learning by designing their learning goals with their teacher. The teacher uses interventions based on the learning goals right from the beginning of the learning process.

Teacher and Learner Roles Change in 1:1 Personalized Learning Environments

Teacher and Learner Roles Change in 1:1 Personalized Learning Environments | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Technology, especially mobile devices, allows learning to feel more personal. Being connected to the content with these devices offers opportunities for anyone to learn anywhere anytime. Yet, just providing technology to learners doesn’t mean that learning is personalized.

Teacher and learner roles change in a Stage One Persoanlized Learning Environment (PLE).

Teacher
- Knows how the learner learns best.
- Redesigns the learning environment.
- Integrates technology.
- Designs assessment strategies.
- Recognizes high-quality resources.

Learner
- Establishes learning goals with teacher.
- Creates a personal learning plan.
- Chooses how to access content.
- Has a voice expressing what they know.
- Selects the way to engage with content.

Four Year Plan to Build a Sustainable PLE for RTT-D | Personalize Learning

Four Year Plan to Build a Sustainable PLE for RTT-D | Personalize Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The RTT-D competition allows for building a sustainable Personalized Learning System over a four year period. We know it takes at least four years to make real change. Personalizing learning can incorporate many of your existing initiatives or a redesign of a combination of what you are doing. In some cases, it will be a complete redesign.

This takes a process, a common language that everyone understands, a shared vision that involves all stakeholders, and an action plan detailing the steps to transform teaching and learning. We designed a four year plan that supports teaching and leading in the application. We work closely with your leadership team to integrate our services across the four year plan.

If all stakeholders in the community create a sustainable shared vision of personalized learning that encourages creativity and engagement with learners who take responsibility for their learning, then the implementation of the vision and plan over a four year period will work for every learner so they are college- and career-ready.

Let us support you in building a sustainable Personalized Learning Environment (PLE)!

""I liked seeing your faces, posting and reading replies, online sessions, and watching the videos. I have no suggestions as this is the best online class experience I have had to date. The other day I was in my principal's office and we were talking about how to get teachers to make "The Shift"- I told him that everyone should have the opportunity to take this class! "

Growing Sustainable Personalized Learning Environments

Growing Sustainable Personalized Learning Environments | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Building a system of personalized learning environments takes a process and time. Check out this four year model to build a sustainable system.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Moving to a Personalized Learning Environment (PLE) is a culture shift. Moving an entire district or a region to a system with sustainable PLEs takes time and a process. PLEs are built on a human infrastructure with groups of people where some may be definitely ready and others resistant. Those that are ready may still hesitate to jump in unless they have the support and resources they need when they need it.

Personalize Learning in 6 Steps

Personalize Learning in 6 Steps | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

ISTE Learning & Leading with Technology (May Issue) features "A Step-by-Step Guide to Personalize Learning".

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

This Feature Article by Barbara Bray and Kathleen McClaskey provides the background on what is and what is not Personalized Learning, the Stages of Personalized Learning that impacts teacher and learner roles, and the process using the six steps to personalize learning in a Stage One PLE (Personalized Learning Environment).

Denise Lombardo's curator insight, April 29, 2013 11:55 PM

Great article - makes clear the difference between differentiation, individualisation and personalisation - and also clearly lays out some ways to gradually lead your students - and your teaching - towards more personalised approaches for your students. Great framework for those keen on potential of PBL/Design Thinking but wanting to know how to get from where they are now to where they want their class/students to be.

The Connected Learner in a PLE

The Connected Learner in a PLE | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

We are all learners. We are connected to each other and innovative learning experiences that we never thought were possible before. It doesn't matter how old you are, where you live, and what you want to learn, you can connect to people, resources, and courses so you, the learner, can learn what you want when you want to. This means what we call "school" is different. Teachers and learners are different. Roles change. This is a huge culture shift.

The information from our chart Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization chart is about being a Connected Learner in a Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

> starts with the learner

> connects with interests, passions, and aspirations

> learners actively participate in the design of their learning

> learners have a voice and choice on what they learn

> different objectives for each learner

> learner selects appropriate technology and resources to support their learning

> learners build a network of peers, teachers, and others to guide and support their learning

> competency-based models where the learner demonstrates mastery

> assessment AS learning

> teachers develop capacity to create independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) Version One chart needed to be updated. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received after posting our first version of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage?

We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version two. Some districts shared with us that our version one was going to be their foundation of their personalized learning initiative. We wanted to refine it so it was clear, consistent, and easily understood. We went to work to update the stages for them and anyone else moving to a personalized learning environment.

Please feel free to download version two and let us know how it supports your transformation to personalizing learning.
