Personalized Learning in BC - Parents' Guide

Personalized Learning in BC - Parents' Guide | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Here is the Personalized Learning Guide for Parents in British Columbia as they embark in transforming their educational system.  Under the British Columbia Education Plan, teachers, students and parents will work together to make sure every student’s needs are met, passions are explored and goals are achieved. This means student-centered learning that’s focused on the needs, strengths and aspirations of each individual young person. Students will play an active role in designing their own education and will be increasingly accountable for their own learning success. It’s all about putting students at the centre of education. That means giving teachers and schools the flexibility to make sure each student is well served by their educational program. Each student is unique and our education system will support each student’s interests and ways of learning.

Roundtable on Personalised Learning (through the BCASCD)

Roundtable on Personalised Learning (through the BCASCD) | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"On Thursday, November 3rd, 2011, members of the Metro Vancouver education community from a range of perspectives met to address the big questions around Personalised Learning. As an organization, BCASCD promotes the exemplary practices in curriculum and develops leadership and professional capacity for the success of all learners. As such, a roundtable on Personalised Learning was held. The executive invited educators from a range of districts and on various pathways of their careers in education, including student-teachers, classroom teachers, district support teachers, vice-principals, principals, district principals, post-secondary teacher-educators, and senior administrators.

Four areas around Personalised Learning were discussed, with the intent of creating a working document demonstrating what Personalised Learning may look like at a class, school, district and provincial level."

These areas were:

> Stakeholders:  Who are they?  What are their needs?

> Competencies/skills/knowledge: What are the ‘must-haves’? What are the ‘would-like-to-haves’?

> Assessment/Reporting: How does Personalised Learning change reporting schedules, assessments (AFL) and student engagement;

> Structures: What are the environmental/space/time requirements.

Read about what ideas emerged from this roundtable discussion as British Columbia embarks on implementing personalised learning in their province.

3 BC Educators Discuss Personalized Learning – Part 1

3 BC Educators Discuss Personalized Learning – Part 1 | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"There has been a lot of conversation taking place throughout the province on Personalized Learning and it is great to see conversation centered on students happening. In conversations we are having with individuals, we have found that there is still some confusion about personalized learning. With that in mind 4Moms1Dream set out to interview 3 of BC’s education leaders, on the topic of personalized learning:

· David Wees (DW), author of the 21st Century Educator blog is an educator at Stratford Hall in Vancouver.

· Chris Wejr (CW), Principal of Kent Elementary School in Agassiz, through his blog The Wejr Board shares his experience and thoughts on educational topics with readers.

· Chris Kennedy (CK) is the Superintendent in SD 45, West Vancouver. You can follow him on his blog – Culture of Yes."

Vancouver students will gather Tuesday at the Roundhouse community centre to discuss what they need for optimal learning and how personalized learning could be expanded in their schools.

Some 230 students from across the district are expected to attend.

“The forum will be facilitated by a team of over 40 students and will feature the use of iPad, iTouch, and twitter technology. A graphic artist will be present at the forum to visually and artistically capture the innovative ideas and themes in a gigantic mural.

The mural will serve as a significant component of the vision for student learning and engagement. At the end of day students will present their ideas and themes to VSB Senior Management, Trustees and the Ministry of Education who are all key sponsors of the forum.”

"Perhaps an early test of B.C.’s personalization mandate should be our ability to achieve that commitment for those who need it most: those for whom the currently organized system provides the greatest challenges and barriers. How do we meet them where they are and honour their life experiences to date? How do we scaffold their early engagement in our schools to support long term success? How does learning begin, make sense and become authentic and relevant through their eyes?"
