What is iSolveIt?

iSolveIt is a mobile digital learning environment that supports the development of logical thinking and reasoning skills, which are essential competencies of algebra and mathematics in general. The environment includes a collection of tablet-based puzzles that have been designed using the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

This info graphic shows multiple ways that our 2e kids can process, retell, and "show" what they know without ever having to put pencil to paper. At last, light at the end of the tunnel for our very visual kids with dygraphia!

A report just released, “Universal Design for Learning: Initiatives on the Move,” for the first time looks at how UDL is being implemented and understood.

 

"The new study finds that that many states and districts have embraced UDL’s tenets, which call for students to be presented with information and content in different ways and for giving them multiple options to show their understanding of what they know.  The instructional approach is intended to help all students, not just those with disabilities."

inov8-ed.com created a handout listing apps for language-based learning disabilities in two categories,

> apps for language support.

 

inov8 Educational Consulting recently presented with Kimberly Murphy (@kimberlyslp, a speech and language pathologist) at the Québec Provincial Association of Teachers conference.  Their presentation focused on the planning and implementation of new assistive technologies; apps and software for students with language-based learning disabilities.

 

They covered the language basis of reading, Assistive Technology and Universal Design for Learning, the SETT framework, and app and software recommendations with a number of screen-capture video demonstrations.

 

Here is a list of their most recommended apps and software, specific to students with language-based learning disabilities. Please note that this is not a full list of software and apps that are currently available.

Mr. Borman surveyed 17 students in one of his classes and discovered that there were a few needs when it came to reading comprehension. He has put together "A Toolbox of Reading Comprehension Apps" that can support the needs of his students in his UDL classroom.  For each app, he has outlined "What it does", "How students can use it" and the "UDL Principles".

Mr. Borman used Edmodo to survey his student's learning preferences and based on the results, identified apps that would support reading comprehension and promote UDL in his classroom.  Would love to know how students responded to the options.  Nice process, Mr. Borman!

A few years ago I met Alex at an ISTE Conference and want to say that she has a wealth of experience and knowledge in using tools with diverse learners. Alex is  a speech language pathologist with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and she will be sharing both UDL strategies and iPad apps that are engaging for ALL students. She will also introduce class profiling as a valuable strategy for teachers.

"Math Paper is by far the best option I’ve seen for doing math work on the iPad! Math Paper won’t do calculations or graphs, but it provides all the tools needed to do everything from basic computation to complex algebra. Math Paper has been developed with the principles of UDL in mind, so it’s a tool that can be used effectively and independently by anyone, including individuals with motor challenges or cognitive processing issues. Accessibility and ease of use have been addressed successfully.

 

Math Paper cost:  $19.99.  Paul Hamilton notes in his blog that this is an exceptional app and is worth the cost.

Here is an app that gives students a maths workbook to use in class. I am wondering if it ever pops up as free on AppsGoneFree in order to test it. I am not sure it is worth the cost but might need to look into it.

The Talking Calculator app can be used to support math comprehension, assist students with math-related learning difficulties, as well as students with visual challenges. The audio can also reinforce student comprehension of numeric elements.

iTranslate ~ Free Translator in Over 50 Languages!

iTranslate is the first real Universal Translator with over 50 languages that will translate words, phrases or whole text.  This a great app for students who do not speak English or who are not fluent in a language. iTranslate can also assist a teacher in communicating with these students. 

 

This is a free app but for .99 you can also have Voice Recognition in a number of languages.
