Arts-Integrated Pedagogy May Enhance Academic Learning - Psychology Today

Arts-Integrated Pedagogy May Enhance Academic Learning - Psychology Today | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Fifth-grade students who created some type of art—such as a drawing, writing a rap song, singing a science lesson, or choreographing a dance—that reflected specific classroom lessons, retained science-based knowledge longer than students who didn’t make art in the same class, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University. These interdisciplinary findings support the benefits of broader arts integration into conventional classrooms.

As a specific example, the researchers found that students who memorized and sang a song with lyrics that held science-based lessons remembered the content much longer and with better detail than most classmates who tried to retain textbook content learned by rote without a song. This paper, “The Effects of Arts-Integrated Instruction on Memory for Science Content,” was recently published in Trends in Neuroscience and Education.

8 Tips For Teachers Frustrated With Technology - TeachThought

8 Tips For Teachers Frustrated With Technology - TeachThought | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
With regard to technology, education has to be in this for the long haul regardless of short-term loss as everything seeks to reconcile itself with everything else, much in the same way that the purpose of education is long-term–it should seek to improve the arc of students’ lives and the condition of their communities.

How much work it takes to make that happen is only one part of the timeless struggle of raising human beings.

Easy-to-Use Guide: The Instruction and Technology Integration Model | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
In order to meet the needs of all students–and to equip teachers with a consistent process to do so–Superintendent Dr. Philip Hickman created a new instructional model. The K-16 Instruction and Technology Integration Model, or “K-16 ITI” is transforming teaching and personalizing learning for students in Mississippi and beyond.

We teamed up with Dr. Hickman to design an easy-to-use guide so that educators across the country can benefit from this model.

What Computer Science Education Looks Like in the Nation’s Largest School District (EdSurge News)

What Computer Science Education Looks Like in the Nation’s Largest School District (EdSurge News) | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"With public schools varying in mission and curriculum, implementation of the computer science training looks drastically different across the district. Many of the participating teachers are taking an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, introducing it as part of math or art classes already available. "We had a great art teacher in our first cohort who started doing color theory and ‘binary’ together,” says Marcus, “She taught color theory using a programming language called Processing.”

This type of computer science subject integration could be good news for educators seeking a flexible way to add CS to their existing curriculums, but for evaluators assessing competencies and standards, this could be problematic. "New York State doesn’t have computer science standard requirements. We are in the process of building what we would call a blueprint for CS education. The plan will define the foundational concepts and practices that every student needs to know," says Marcus. The department expects to release this blueprint by the summer."

10 Practical Strategies to Integrate Technology in Your Classroom

10 Practical Strategies to Integrate Technology in Your Classroom | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
"Using technology in class should always be motivated by a real need to optimize students' learning and to enhance your teaching. Every time you want to digitize a teaching task ask yourself the following questions: what are the added advantages of integrating technology in this task? And what are the alternative plans if things did not go as planned? The purpose is to make sure your use of technology is pedagogically sound and that it aligns with your own teaching goals. There are actually several ways to integrate technology in your classroom from collecting students feedback to grading paperlessly. In today's post, we are sharing with you this handy visual that features10 good examples of how you can put technology to serve your teaching. This visual is based on Marcus Guido's blog post "25 Easy Ways to Use Technology in the Classroom". We have done little bit of tweaking (with permission) on Marcus original list and ended up with the list below."

10 Things to Fear @dougpete

10 Things to Fear @dougpete | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
On Thursday, Colleen Rose asked this million dollar question on her blog.

What holds us back from embracing technology in our daily practice?

Now, I could have taken the easy route and posted a reply to her blog but instead, I collaborated with my buddy Peter McAsh to come up with this Top 10 list big list.

We seem to have mastered Dropbox Paper so that was our platform for this collaboration.

Note that we’re not afraid to bite firmly on our tongues…

This isn’t necessarily a definitive list and there’s no order but it’s what we came up with.
