New ‘Horizon Report’ Looks Back on What Past Predictions Got Wrong | EdSurge News

New ‘Horizon Report’ Looks Back on What Past Predictions Got Wrong | EdSurge News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Remember the hype around gamification? About a decade ago, FarmVille and other Facebook games were all the rage. It led the Horizon Report, an annual attempt by a panel of experts to forecast educational trends, to predict in 2012 that gamification would be a major force in education within three years.

But here we are in 2019, and people aren’t talking much about gamification in education. In fact, after 2015, the Horizon Report stopped mentioning it at all.

This week Educause released the higher education edition of the Horizon Report for 2019, and for the first time it looked back on how well past reports did at accurately predicting what would be on the horizon. Titled “Fail or Scale,” the new section of the report includes three essays that look back at three predictions from past reports with the benefit of hindsight.

NMC Horizon Report Preview 2018 | EDUCAUSE | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Higher education leaders and decision makers use the annual Issues, Technologies, and Trends resources to know what's important and where to focus in their IT planning and management activities. When viewed together the resources provide more complete and nuanced guidance on institutional IT priorities.

The lists are created by the community for the community, with support from EDUCAUSE staff. The Top 10 IT Issues list is developed by a panel of experts comprised of IT and non-IT leaders, CIOs, and faculty members and then voted on by EDUCAUSE members in an annual survey.

The Trend Watch and Strategic Technologies reports are derived from authoritative sources that annually identify emerging and maturing technologies and trends in higher education. The ELI Key Issues in Teaching and Learning list is crowd-sourced by surveying the higher education teaching and learning community to identify the issues and topics most important to them. The NMC Horizon Report identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching, and creative inquiry in education.

Institutions of higher education are actively developing new strategies to rethink how they fulfill their mission. Economic and political pressures have heightened scrutiny of the merit of postsecondary education, especially in light of cost, access, and workforce readiness. Increasingly diverse student populations have added momentum to the attention paid to student success—attention that is frequently focused on low completion rates and high student loan debt. Not only are students more diverse, but a specific aspect of that diversity is the “new majority learner,” who is older, more likely to be balancing work and family with college, and has vastly different needs from those of a traditional-aged student navigating a residential college experience. Institutions of higher education are rethinking how to meet the academic and social needs of all students seeking credentials or degrees. This shift to student-centered learning requires faculty and academic advisors alike to act as guides and facilitators. Approaches to new degree programs, including the rise in new forms of interdisciplinary studies, indicate that institutions are seeking to provide students with experiences that connect disciplines while rethinking how to capitalize on existing resources.
