"The United Nations on Thursday highlighted Brazil's call last year for the world's nuclear powers to follow through on commitments to pursue elimination of their atomic arsenals.

 

The global nonproliferation regime has had some success in preventing additional nations from acquiring nuclear weapons, but a "compliance deficit" has emerged in carrying out its parallel goal of nuclear abolition, Brazilian Ambassador Maria Viotti told the U.N. First Committee's 67th session, which concluded in November."
