Technology Makes Fitness More Interactive, Engaging - Athletic Business

Technology Makes Fitness More Interactive, Engaging - Athletic Business | Digital Health | Scoop.it

The fitness industry is responding to this generation's perceptions by thinking differently. "We need to make group fitness interesting to the Millennial generation," says Barbara Ebersberger, vice president of studio business at Reebok, which recently partnered with group-fitness programming leader Les Mills on a new studio-programming concept. "They grew up with Wii and Xbox, and they are looking for a form of exercise that shares those experiences. They think about studio fitness as something that their moms were doing."

Mike Rucker's insight:

I would argue it is innovation, and not technology per se, that is making fitness more engaging...

Mike Rucker's insight:

Ninety million wearables were expected to hit the market last year and instead the market could only bear about 60 percent of this (even after heavy promotions and Black Friday). 2015 is looking worse, and would be horrendous if it weren't for people excited about smartwatches.

Is Fitbit’s opt-out drawing the battle lines against HealthKit?

Is Fitbit’s opt-out drawing the battle lines against HealthKit? | Digital Health | Scoop.it

Although Jawbone, Withings, and iHealth are on board with HealthKit, Misfit Shine and Basis are not yet integrated. Basis posted a noncommittal response on its own forumand Misfit connects to Health, but sends only step data as of now. Were other big wearables to follow Fitbit’s lead, Apple could find itself with a pretty unattractive product on its phones, and the Health app could become as irrelevant as Apple Maps, at least to fitness-oriented users.

Mike Rucker's insight:

Probably not, but it's not like HealthKit is a truly open ecosystem yet anyway.

Under Armour Posts 31% Revenue Growth, Buys MyFitnessPal and Endomondo

Under Armour Posts 31% Revenue Growth, Buys MyFitnessPal and Endomondo | Digital Health | Scoop.it
Much like the athletes Under Armour serves, shares of the company's stock are gaining strength in Wednesday's after-hours trading session. The upward move is for good reason: not only did Under Armour post higher-than-expected top and bottom line fourth quarter results, but it also announced that it will acquire MyFitnessPal, the maker of a popular calorie-counting and fitness-tracking app.
Mike Rucker's insight:

As data supports the adoption for new wearable hardware is low(er than expected), I'm bullish on Under Armour's long-term strategy to integrate the UX of these devices into things we are already willing to wear, i.e. clothes.

Mike Rucker's insight:

I was often asked, "How is Google Glass going to change consumer digital health?" My answer was almost  always, "it's not." Especially after it jumped the shark with the Sarah Slocum incident. I think smartwatches will have a better go at it... much better. That said, there are still some amazing professional digital health applications that have been innovated thus far.
