Janet Goldner : Can We Heal?

Janet Goldner : Can We Heal?,  steel - a 4-foot tall 5 -page hinged steel book, Museum of Contemporary Sculpture "Europos Parkas", 2000, Vilnius, Lithuania

"This work is a continuation of my series of large steel books. The interplay of positive and negative space, of image and text is important to this work. This steel accordion-book/fence has five 4-foot x 4-foot steel pages which ask, "Can we acknowledge the pain we have caused in the world, even as we struggle with our own?" Goldner explains, "While nothing can excuse the attack on the World Trade Center or the terrible loss of innocent life, it is not difficult to understand why people would be angry at the U.S. The text in Can We Acknowledge? addresses this aspect of the tragedy."

Janet Goldner: Tuguna

Janet Goldner: Tuguna | Art Installations, Sculpture, Contemporary Art | Scoop.it

Janet Goldner: Tuguna, 22" x 34" x 38", steel, 2000

"Tuguna was inspired by my research in Mali. Constructed of scrap steel, the tuguna/ntloma/Y-stick form is an architectural pillar, in the form of a forked stick used as the support for traditional Malian adobe houses. They are often quite undulating in form but provide, none-the-less, the internal structure and support for traditional buildings. With them I reconstruct the shaded area where elders gather to discuss important events and concepts both current and past. The form becomes a metaphor for structure, strength and support." J.G.

Janet Goldner : Zig-Zag

Janet Goldner : Zig-Zag | Art Installations, Sculpture, Contemporary Art | Scoop.it

Janet Goldner : Zig-Zag Installation, Art Resources Transfer, NYC, steel, 2003, New York

"Zig-Zag is an exhibition of  gestural steel sculptures. Zig-Zags occur in Malian chiwara masks and in ideograms, signifying a road that is not straight but contains many twists, turns, and detours. This work is the first to be inspired by African intellectual production rather than my experience of the culture at large. The movement and lightness in these sculptures counterbalances the current heaviness and instability in the world." J.G.
