Brittany Cavanough's curator insight, May 29, 2017 8:43 AM

On my practical placement, I witnessed my mentor teacher use kahoot with her grade 8 class and for those 10 minutes I could not wipe the smile off my face and thought, this is why I am here. The students were engaged, they loved it and the teacher got an idea of if the class understood a concept or if they needed more work on it. While it does not promote higher order thinking I do think there is a place for it within the classroom.

Jazmine Salter's curator insight, May 8, 2020 9:45 PM
The article link above compares different online quiz and game websites that teachers can utilise in the classroom. The websites compared are Kahoot!, Quizizz, Quizlet Live and Gimkit. The article provides information about the pros and cons of each online quiz site and what is unique to the specific site. Moreover, insight is provided about how teachers can alternatively use the website. This is a great resource for teachers to use as it gives a different way to review content in the classroom. I have personally used Kahoot! during my professional placement, and found it to be engaging for the students, while at the same time testing their knowledge. An example of how this could be used in the health and physical education classroom is for teachers to choose a particular site and developing a review quiz for the students. Students thinking skills are developed from the reviewing activity as well as targeting numeracy and literacy skills. Alternatively, students could create their own quizzes using the sites and then the class can complete different students’ quizzes. These activities promote students to think creatively and critically about each of the questions to include into the quiz. Likewise, students are developing their ICT capability by creating an online quiz.

" ...

One of the frustrating things I found in teaching online last semester was the lack of direct contact with students. The class felt impersonal, despite my efforts to give it life.  I found that especially frustrating when I graded assignments. The feedback seemed cold and distant, even as I as I tried to point out strong areas of writing and multimedia projects.  I overcame this in part by using my iPad to add audio comments to grading. ...
