I particularly like the part that concerns  to train for positive assertion versus constant compliance. The compliance to please teachers versus the ownership of learning all  to please parents often provides a conflict for me.

Morality - Ethics

Morality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morality (from the Latin "manner, character, proper behavior") is the differentiation of intentions, decisions, and actions between those that are "good" (or right) and those that are "bad" (or wrong). The philosophy of morality is ethics. A moral code is a system of morality (according to a particular philosophy, religion, culture, etc.)

Teaching Ethics in the Age of Technology

Teaching Ethics in the Age of Technology | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Ethical decision-making should be included as a 21st century skill (overused term but don't know of an alternative).  Some would profess that ethical decision-making has always been a needed skill....

Society is a dynamic system. It must, by nature, evolve in order to survive. As we develop the new definitions of appropriate behavior in the online environment it is imperative that many members of society be engaged in this ongoing dialogue.

An informed community and active discussion of ethical issues will enable society to determine civil and just manners to deal with the nuances of technological advancement (Rezmierski, 1992).

By opening this dialogue within the K-12 environment, teachers will be able to prepare students to understand the proper use of technology and explore the issues that will continue to unfold (Using Moral Development Theory to Teach K-12 Cyber Ethics).

Ethics, Morals, and Values Central in Leadership

Ethics, Morals, and Values Central in Leadership | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Leadership experts in the K-12 field Jill Berkowicz and Ann Myers write about challenges and possibilities for administrators in the 21st century.

Education is an inherently moral matter. It is moral because people develop (or fail to develop) morally as well as physically, emotionally, and intellectually. It is moral because teaching--helping to shape other people's minds, sensibilities, and capabilities -raises deep questions of purpose, values, and responsibility.

It is moral because it involves the relationship between one generation and another, a relationship that helps determine the direction and quality of human life" (p. 152). Therein lies our uppermost responsibility. We must stay in touch with our conscience and allow it to inform our decisions.

Civil Courage Begins in Every day Situations

Civil Courage Begins in Every day Situations | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Civil Courage Can Be Learned

There are behavioral training programs for different age groups (children, adolescents, adults), in which the participants acquire knowledge and skills to show civil courage in different situations and to interfere appropriately. The Institute of Psychology (motivation) of the University of Zurich offers a training program whose aim is to promote civil courage; the program is outlined below. The training’s motto is: “Small steps instead of heroic deeds.” It is based on the latest psychological findings on the conditions of civil courage. According to the column model, knowledge and behavior are strengthened. The training includes the following modules:

• Reflection of own moral values and experiences related to civil courage;

• Conveying psychological knowledge about the context of discrimination and violence and the conditions of civil courage;

• Giving concrete behavior tips what one can do in a critical situation and what one must not do in any case;

• Practicing concrete civil courage related behavior in role plays and mental simulation exercises;

• Preparing individual behavior plans for future civil courage situations.
