Our lack of interest in data ethics will come back to haunt us | #Tracking #Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

When was the last time you saw a creepy ad on Facebook, which seemed to know about a product you were discussing with a coworker? Or when was the last time you noticed that your Google search had been modified to suit variables like your current location and personal interests?

These micro-events happen on a daily basis for most of us, and are reminders of how valuable and how ubiquitous our data really is. Data is the currency of the new world, and with 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created each day, that status isn’t going away anytime soon.

The problem is, data scientists and analysts are constantly talking about the potential for how to use this data, but too few are talking about the ethics. If we’re going to keep pushing for better systems built on big data, we need to democratize and popularize the ethical conversation surrounding them.

Privacy group files FTC complaint over Facebook's 'emotional contagion' study

Privacy group files FTC complaint over Facebook's 'emotional contagion' study | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

EPIC contends that Facebook 'purposefully messed with people's minds' when it manipulated their news feeds to measure emotional responses.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed the complaint Thursday, asking the FTC to impose sanctions on Facebook. The study violated terms of a 20-year consent decree that requires the social-networking company must protect its users’ privacy, EPIC said. EPIC also wants Facebook to be forced to disclose the algorithms it uses to determine what appears in users’ news feeds.

Seriously, IMHO (in my humble opinion) NEW startups are NOT looking anymore on ETHICS and are just bringing on the market whatever technology to make money!!! If they are "Google Glass" or the mentioned company in this article and ALSO drones with cameras!

Waiting for the next ones who make a breach to my private life, my private atmosphere which is MY RIGHT!!!

Next Apps and NEW technologies brought to the market might fly around my apartment and recording everything what I and visitors are doing, this is a NIGHTMARE, excuse-me, please :)))
