ENISA rolls out a continuation to its most used and valued technical training material, on Mobile Threats Incident Handling and Artefact analysis

The material released is two-fold:

• The new content familiarises trainees with concepts, tools, and techniques used for incident handling on mobile devices, and offers a methodology on how to react - properly and timely - when the necessity comes.
• The new artefact analysis training material helps information security analysts to correctly analyse malware and understand its potential functionality, enabling the organisation to create proper countermeasures and mitigation plans.

The European Commission welcomes the vote of the European Parliament in a plenary session today to extend the mandate of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).

Today's vote (626 for, 45 against) is the conclusion of lengthy political discussions between Council and the European Parliament. A political agreement was reached at the end of January 2013, and EU Ministers formally endorsed the Regulation on 8 February. The new Regulation (seeMEMO/10/459) grants ENISA a new 7 year mandate.

This is particularly significant given the important role the agency will play in the implementation of the EU Cybersecurity Strategy adopted by the European Commission in January (see IP/13/94).

ENISA will retain its seat in Heraklion, Crete, but will also have a branch office in Athens which brings it closer to its stakeholders and makes the agency more efficient.

European Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes said: "Today's vote offers a new start for a new Enisa: with expanded tasks, a more agile and efficient organization and governance.

EU cyber security agency, ENISA, has today issued an information Flash Note, ‘Cyber attacks – a new edge for old weapons’ that analyses and tracks recent cyber attacks.

The latest targeted cyber-attacks on government organizations and high-profile companies show the need for greater awareness and knowhow in network and information security, says the EU’s European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).

This Threat Landscape and Good Practice Guide for Big Data provides an overview of the current state of security in the Big Data area. In particular, it identifies Big Data assets, analyses exposure of these assets to threats, lists threat agents, takes into account published vulnerabilities and risks, and points to emerging good practices and new researches in the field. To this aim, ongoing community-driven efforts and publicly available information have been taken into account.

“There are different aspects to cyber security and cyber-attacks. But all current security approaches tend to make use of the same technology, making it difficult to judge who is attacking what and why. Within this context, it should be examined what cyber security can offer at another level, contributing and protecting the EU citizens. Cyber security is the EU’s ‘digital frontier.”

Helmbrecht said that the security of network and information systems is essential to the security of all the critical sectors in society, noting that disruptions to these infrastructures and services are becoming more frequent and are estimated to result in annual losses in the range of €260- €340 billion Euros ($416-$544 billion dollars).

“Various recent studies, including those of ENISA, demonstrate that the threat landscape will get worse, unless we take firm action,” Helmbrecht said.

EU security agency Enisa has released a new paper recommending that policy-makers promote “privacy friendly” services – a move that appears to set it at odds with British PM David Cameron. The UK leader pledged yesterday to ban the use of strong encryption in communications.

The European Network and Information Security Agency, to give it its full name, argued in its report that privacy is a “fundamental human right” according to the European Convention on Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs) like encryption are an important technical means of fighting off challenges to privacy, Enisa said in its report, Privacy and Data Protection by Design – from policy to engineering.
