Early Friday morning the world experienced the year’s latest cyberattack. Starting first in the United Kingdom and Spain, the malicious “WannaCrypt” software quickly spread globally, blocking customers from their data unless they paid a ransom using Bitcoin. The WannaCrypt exploits used in the attack were drawn from the exploits stolen from the National Security Agency, or NSA, in the United States. That theft was publicly reported earlier this year.

The threat of being hit with a ransoware attack has the vast majority of companies scared to death that they are next on some cybercriminals hit list, but despite this high level of angst, most have little faith in their back up systems to help restore their files and have even less confidence in their security systems to defend their data.

An unusual new strain of ransomware makes good on its threat, doing what the majority of other varieties only claim to do.

 

In this case however, Blinka has witnessed the Trojan encrypting images, documents and executables in an attempt to hinder any removal attempts. Whomever is responsible for the malware is not in the business of completely crippling machines, so Windows system files are not included in the forced encryption. Infected computers will still function for the most part, but data will be lost and many third-party programs will not work.

La supercherie, découverte aux États-Unis par le FBI avant de gangrener l'Europe, a provoqué un vent de panique à l'échelle planétaire. Selon nos informations, pas moins de 1284 plaintes ont déjà été enregistrées depuis novembre 2011 par la gendarmerie en France. «Ce n'est que la partie émergée de l'iceberg, car au moins dix fois plus d'internautes ont été infectés par le virus», précise le colonel Freyssinet. «Si une partie d'entre eux ont eu la bonne idée de ne pas verser la rançon, d'autres ayant fréquenté des sites illégaux préfèrent ne pas se vanter de leur mésaventure et tentent de régler le problème en bidouillant leur ordinateur avec les moyens du bord», renchérit-on à la Direction générale de la gendarmerie nationale.
