Teaching online is easier and more effective when you have the confidence to be yourself!

 

When you teach online, it’s vital to let your real personality shine through.

Authenticity and honesty help to make a genuine connection with your students.

It’s a terrible idea to try and be something you’re not.

Your students don’t want to see a sweaty man in a tight jumpsuit impersonating a legend.

 

And pretending to be someone else is exhausting.

You stop being an online teacher and become an actor instead – in a role you’re not comfortable in (and even worse, maybe not prepared for).

Being your real self makes it easier for your students to give you the respect you deserve. It’s always pretty obvious when someone is being authentic rather than faking enthusiasm or expertise.

Counterfeit Leadership

Counterfeit Leadership | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The responsibility of a leader is to lead. (What a concept.) The fact is, some leaders are causing irreparable damage to great institutions by shirking their responsibilities. They’re afraid to address difficult issues, make tough decisions, and introduce the change that’s required to achieve long-term success. Instead, these “counterfeit leaders” spend much of their time playing politics, protecting their turf, and promoting their self-interests. To make matters worse, counterfeit leaders, in both public and private sectors, often masquerade as positive role models while condoning unethical or irresponsible behavior that undermines the very foundation of their institution.

With full complicity, we reward these misguided efforts by electing politicians for “life” and by paying executives zillions of dollars to damage the same organizations that they “swear” to serve. And just to show there are no hard feelings when things do go irreparably wrong, we offer many of our “finest” golden parachutes to make sure they have a soft landing into their next misadventure.

How do you spot a counterfeit leader? Here are some ways to evaluate our leaders:


Real leaders achieve success by setting the bar high, encouraging teamwork, promoting win-win relationships, and demanding everyone’s best effort. Real leaders win the support of their constituents by earning their trust and respect. This is achieved through powerful ideas, personal expertise, and impeccable integrity rather than through their position or by “pulling rank.”

Leadership...It Depends
Leadership styles sometime depends on the situation. Some people head into a leadership position with big dreams and the best intentions, and then they remember they have to work with people who may not be on board with those big dreams, and they lose those best intentions.

Other times leaders enter into the situation ready to move forward, but because of mandates, rules and the politics of distraction (Hattie. 2015) they become insecure and not sure what to do first. As leaders, when we have so many choices of where to start we sometimes choose not to choose at all. Understanding our current reality is important, but what should be on our radar is not always so glaringly obvious.

In Stephen Covey's seminal work, The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People he showed us...some may even say inspired us...with 7 habits that all successful people have, and taught us that with some hard work we can adopt those habits too.
